Augustine Literacy Project

Tutor One Child, Change Two Lives

alpcharlotte.org

The Augustine Literacy Project uses the Orton-Gillingham approach and Wilson Reading System® materials. Orton-Gillingham is a multi-sensory, explicit, systematic approach to reading instruction that has been effective with students who struggle with literacy for a variety of reasons.

Augustine tutors receive training during a five-day training class. The course is taught by a team of experienced trainers who present topics such as: the Orton-Gillingham approach, the five essential components of research-based reading instruction (phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension), the impact of poverty on literacy skills, the brain and reading, sight words, handwriting, advocacy and more.

Advancing learning outcomes for all children.

helpseducationfund.org

The Helps Education Fund focuses on improving educational equity by providing research-supported programs and services that are free or low-cost and meaningfully advance student learning. One of their programs is HELPS (Helping Early Literacy With Practice Strategies).  The HELPS Program traditionally serves students who receive free/reduced lunch and/or are performing below adequate reading levels.

HELPS is an evidence-based intervention proven to improve students' reading fluency. Reading fluency is one of five essential skills a student must acquire to become a successful reader, and is directly related to reading comprehension. Mastering this fundamental step is a significant tool in increasing student learning and closing achievement gaps. Students receive 1:1 instruction 3 times a week for 15-30 minutes from a trained tutor. The highly scripted program can easily be delivered by trained volunteers.

To ensure implementation fidelity, each tutor receives coaching/support from a certified coach. HELPS tutors build strong relationships with their students and witness reading progress quickly with their students.  HELPS has over 10 years of research supporting its effectiveness in increasing students' reading proficiency. Click here to see why our tutors love being a HELPS tutor!  For more information go to helpseducationfund.org/helps-charlotte.

We’ve developed a formula for tutoring success, and it includes you.

hearttutoring.org

Heart Math Tutoring is a nonprofit that connects volunteers with students who are behind in elementary math and need foundational skills and confidence! Heart works with schools to determine students that would benefit from math support and mentorship, and who may not have access to resources such as private tutoring. Heart then pairs students with a tutor for 1 hour per week. Heart provides training, a fun game-based curriculum, and a staff person present at all times for support. Tutors work with the same student all year helping them build basic math skills (counting through single digit multiplication) and confidence! Both virtual and in-person tutors are needed! Read FAQs here.

Contact: Daisha Delano, Tutor Operations Manager at daisha.delano@heartmathtutoring.org
