The Science Olympiad is a science competition implemented for grades 6-12. Through regional support and partnerships with Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC), CMS students have the opportunity to collaboratively work on problem-solving and applied science through a variety of team events.
School TeamsEach school is encouraged to create teams of students either in the classroom or through extra-curricular clubs who will work on Science Olympiad events throughout the year. From these groups, schools may create one or two teams each comprised of a maximum of 15 students to compete in the regional tournament. Each school provides a coach and registers the team.
The Regional CompetitionThe regional competition is sponsored and hosted by JCSU and UNCC, alternating locations as needed. At the regional level, usually a team competes in about 20 different events. The team prepares for the different events by deciding which on the team will do the events Usually a student should be involved in no more than 3 events. The typical event lasts 50 minutes. More detailed information about each event is discussed at the coaches' clinic and the rule books which are sent out when schools register.
Training for CoachesThe coach's training and local team support are also provided through JCSU's MBRS-RISE Program that provides undergraduate students as assistants to local school teams upon request.
