Co-Curricular Activities
Math Olympiad

The goal of Math Olympiads is to stimulate enthusiasm and a love for mathematics. Math Olympiads introduces important mathematical concepts and teaches major strategies for problem solving. Students learn to develop flexibility in solving problems by using creativity and ingenuity to meet mathematical challenges.

History
Created in 1977 by Dr. George Lenchner, an internationally known math educator, the Math Olympiads went public in 1979. Last year 150,000 students from 5,000 teams worldwide participated in the Olympiads. All 50 states and 25 other countries were represented.

Structure
Math Olympiad clubs meet weekly for an hour. Club members explore a topic or strategy in depth and practice for the contests using non-routine problems. The club members discuss various approaches in solving the problems. The highlights for students are the five monthly contests, given from November to March. No traveling is required.
School clubs choose from two grade appropriate divisions (4-6 and 7-8). For $85 per team, the sponsor receives:

  • All 25 problems and solutions from the previous year. New enrollees receive 50 problems and solutions from the previous two years.
  • 5 contests: 35 copies of all questions and 1 copy of all solutions.
  • 8 newsletters that lead the sponsor through all procedures, provide statistics and relevant information.
  • Certificates for all students and awards for more than 50% of all participating students.
