About CMS

CMS provides academic instruction, rigor and support each school day to more than 140,000 students  in 180 schools throughout the cities and towns of Mecklenburg County.  CMS is proud of its diverse mix of students who represent 183 different countries and various cultural and ethnic backgrounds. CMS offers an extensive range of magnet programs in 71 of its schools to nurture the talents of students who have interest and ability in specific areas. CMS also educates, supports and meets the needs of students with learning and physical disabilities. 
  • Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools was in the top three districts for eighth-grade math, and fourth-grade math and reading in the 2017 tests for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).

Total Rewards

Compensation 

A compensation range is listed for all of our non-instructional positions (exempt and non-exempt) and is determined based on related education and job experience. For instructional positions, compensation is a state rate based on your degree level and the number of completed years of experience as determined by the NC Department of Instruction. Mecklenburg County offers its teachers a local supplement (one of the highest county supplements in the state.) which adds a percentage to the state rate. Salary Schedules can be viewed here.

Medical insurance coverage is provided through the Teachers’ and State Employees’ Comprehensive Major Medical Plan (the State Health Plan). The State Health Plan contracts with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina to manage the benefit plans.

As a CMS employee, you are automatically enrolled in Basic Term Life Insurance paid for by CMS. A benefit of $10,000 is payable to the person you named as beneficiary upon your death from any cause.

State Retirement System

Permanent full-time employees are covered by a defined benefit plan with the North Carolina Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System. Employees are required to contribute 6% of their monthly salary through payroll deduction. CMS also contributes on your behalf to the State Retirement System in an amount that is legislated annually. Your contributions are paid with pre-tax dollars, thereby reducing current state and federal income taxes.
