Understanding the ways in which cultures interact and influence each other is vital to the future success of our students, schools, community and nation. CMS’ Strategic Plan provides the framework for educating our students to compete locally, nationally and internationally.
Our department consists of three comprehensive areas designed to meet these goals: K-12 Social Studies, K-12 World Languages and Study Abroad Programs. Highlights of our department initiatives include
Provide K-8 students with the opportunity to visit local museums and historical sites
Ensure that students understand how our government works and their ability to fully participate in social and political processes
Provide teachers with comprehensive curriculum support and training so that their students master the goals and objectives of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study
Develop formative and summative measures to ensure that all students meet or exceed expectations on local and state assessments
Provide technology and curriculum resources that allow students to enhance geography skills, analyze historical documents, experience other cultures and develop personal financial literacy.
Offer a variety of elective courses that allow students to have a more in depth exploration on topics such as African American Studies, Psychology, Sociology and Contemporary Law and Justice
Ensure that students have the opportunities to take honors level, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses in topics such as US History, World History, Government and Economics.
Continue to enhance our K-12 world language and immersion language programs so that CMS retains its designation as a Global Communicators Program school district for excellence in the study of world languages.
Offer students courses in middle school that provide high school credit and promote ongoing study of a second or third language at an honors, Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate level
Develop local formative assessment instruments to measure student mastery of language and culture as defined by the North Carolina Standard Course of Study
