In 2007, Mecklenburg County voters approved a $516 million bond package for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and the many students and communities it serves.   Money from the bond was used to build nine new schools and three replacement schools.

The nine new schools included two high schools (Rocky River and W.A. Hough), two middle schools (Ridge Road and Whitewater) and five elementary schools (Berewick, Grand Oak, River Gate, River Oaks and Stoney Creek). These schools, along with three replacement schools for Pineville and Bain elementaries and McClintock Middle, have helped us relieve overcrowding across the district.  The 2007 bond money also helped us renovate and upgrade classrooms, labs and gyms at elementary, middle and high schools.

All of the bond money from 2007 has been allocated to specific projects, keeping the promise made to voters about what CMS would do with the money if the bond were approved.

Together we’ve made significant progress in relieving overcrowding and upgrading some of our schools, as the photos on this page show. But we're not done yet.  Even as we were building new schools and expanding others, our enrollment growth continued.   CMS enrolls about 2,000 new students each year and that creates the need for more schools and more classrooms. We need to strengthen the academic options we provide to our students, as well as upgrade technology to support 21st century teaching and learning.  Also, nearly half of our schools were built more than 50 years ago so the need for renovations and replacement schools is real and urgent to maintain safe learning environments for our students and staff.
