School psychologists want to help students succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. We collaborate with educators, parents, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments for all students. We work to strengthen connections between home and school.
About School Psychologist
School psychologists are mental health specialists who have advanced graduate degrees with training in both psychology and education. The preparation focuses on child development, the psychology of learning and behavior, curriculum and instruction, and skills in mental health and educational interventions. School psychologists are licensed by the North Carolina Department of Instruction and some may be recognized by the National Association of School Psychologists as Nationally Certified School Psychologists (NCSP).
Within CMS, 70 school psychologists are assigned to two or three schools and serve students from pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. An additional 6 school psychologists serve preschool children from three to five years of age through the Bright Beginnings Program and Exceptional Children (EC) Departments.
Diane Hamilton was selected as the CMS Practitioner of the Year at the May, 2016 meeting of the Metrolina Association of Psychologists in the Schools (MAPS). She was recognized due to her unwavering dedication to providing high quality supports for struggling learners within her schools. In addition, Diane has led efforts to advocate on behalf of all students within our district. She works tirelessly to support other school psychologists within the district in also advocating for the academic and mental health needs of our students.
Brent Croker, lead school psychologist, was named 2016 December Staff Member of the Month at Nathaniel Alexander Elementary School. As a reward he was given the use of a new Lexus for about two months as his old Toyota Camry was overhauled. With all the work they did, he's pretty sure he's going to be able to drive it for at least another 20 years!
